Getting to Know Rising Action

Our blogs at Rising Action are intended to give indie writers self-publishing help. As the holiday season is approaching, and everyone needs a break this year, we decided to introduce our first blog about getting to know us as people. But instead of people, we’re going to introduce you to three very important dogs!  If you love puppers, you’ll be happy to know that we are dog people too.

(Tina’s) Denny

My eleven-year-old pug is very very stubborn. He loves food, cuddles, and picking fights with big dogs. You can’t tell in this picture, but he only has one eye. He started a scuffle with his brother dog but couldn’t end it. Despite this, I’ve seen him challenge King Shepherds and Huskies to a fight; I bet he’d even challenge a coyote. As such, I call him “my old man full of regret”, and he was the basis for the survivalist dog, Mort, in my novel What Branches Grow. I also dedicated the book to him. I wanted to call him Kirk, after a certain Captain, but my partner refused, so we chose another of William Shatner’s characters. I also wanted to call him Mr. Bingley, but that got shut down hard.

(Tina’s) Ruger

My seven-year-old Shepherd-Mastiff is a big softie. All he wishes is that he was small enough to crawl into your lap! His favourite things are a specific ball we call his “orb”, off-leash walks in the woods, and bringing me rabbits he’s hunted. Unlike his brother, when he gets into a scuffle his tag wags a mile-a-minute; he loves staying over at the kennel as he gets to play with other dogs. He’s a natural at home security because he hears every little thing, but his subsequent barks are not as welcome. He feels it’s his duty to exercise his vocal cords on every dog that walks by outside. We named him Ruger after the firearm, though I don’t remember why.

(Alex’s) Roscoe

Roscoe is all attitude. Don’t let the extremely cute and cuddly facade fool you! This boy will bark at you if his dinner is even a minute late and will continue to bark as you make it. Though he’s incredibly high maintenance, he has to be the best thing I’ve done in my entire life. Like Tina’s dog Ruger, Roscoe is the home security, barking the second anything comes close to the front door… and sometimes it’s just the wind. For a big boy, he’s scared of legitimately everything and will take a bit to warm up to you. But when he does, he will love you, unconditionally. He loves going for walks, as long as they’re not too intense, as he will sit down when he’s tired and demand to go home. I named him Roscoe after Rosco P. Coltrane from the movie Moonrunners and the Dukes of Hazard
